An open letter to John Boehner...

 Dear Speaker Boehner,

I am writing this letter with the mind and spirit of a naturalized citizen in response to your recent comments about the GOP.  You stated you would like to present the GOP as the "alternate" party instead of just the party of "opposition".  While the semantics may soften and the tone might change from opposite and fight it towards a different choice, the GOP mindset- or at least how it is seen by many others- will need to change more than just a slogan.  The conservative movement needs to stress where and how it actually meshes with some of the ideals of liberalism-after all, what is a belief in less government if not liberalism, the do my own thing, man idea?  The GOP needs to tell people that it wants to stay out of their doctor's offices, bedrooms, churches, out of their pockets and off their property.  How to appeal to most of the masses?  Explain the role of the federal government-maintaining the borders, international commerce and our relationship with foreign governments, and making sure the constitution is enforced uniformly across the nation.  And that's about it.  That means the GOP will have to accept same sex unions, even using the actual words marriage, and stress the importance of a core family unit, even ones with two dads or two moms.  That means accepting the fact that 40 percent of liberals claim no affiliation with any one religion, and that freedom of religion can and does for many people mean freedom from religion.  It also means a fair, flat tax where one man's burden is not any more than the next, as in we all pay the same percentage, and definitely not near the rates we pay now!  It also means accepting the fact that abortions are sought out and performed, and that our own bodies are ours to do with as we see fit to control our destinies.  I would like to hear you say that the new GOP is the "justice for all" party, where a citizen is really in control of his own life, where the real and only obstacle to anyone's success is truly only themselves.  The party that believes you actually may do as you wish-without government restriction, and without government aid.  You must get people to realize, Mr. Speaker, that the freedom to do your own thing comes with the responsibility to finance it, and that we are not responsible for each other to the point of nurturing and promoting individuals through their bad choices. (And yes, we must bring back labels like good, bad, smart, wise, dumb, unwise, unproductive, etc.)
Mr. Speaker, you must realize that the grand majority of the population born after 1980, immigrant or not, college educated or not, do not carry with them the collective memories and shared struggles of their ancestors.  World history is not known, different ways of thinking are not analyzed and criticized, and the lessons from the past are not learned anew and carried forward.  You must remind us, Mr. Speaker, of why and how this country was born, of how the places the founders came from treated them just like our government has grown to treat us.   And then ask us to help fix it, by embracing and voting for the aforementioned ideas.

This citizen thanks you for your time and attention,

Most sincerely yours,
The Naturalized Citizen
