Will the U.N. finally do something about North Korea?  I doubt it...

but I'm grateful to the WSJ for at least keeping the subject alive as often as possible.

And just as an observation from the Easter European point of view, why would Putin worry about sanctions?  It seems like President Obama is not old enough to remember the cold war too well, but I can tell you from personal experience that my grandma and I shopped in the "dollar" store of communist Hungary at the height of the Cold War with cash dollars my father would send right in the mail.  Fine perfumes to blue jeans, didn't even have to go under-ground, perfectly legit.  How naive once again on "our" part to believe luxury goods or vacations or Mercedes Benz  or pate or whatever will be cut off from the Russian Oligarchy with our sanctions.  And guess what, during the Cold War, much of the West's stuff was made in America's factories, and here only.  Now everything is made (or copied) in China to begin with, so our goods will not be missed even if they are desired since some imitation of everything is available everywhere.  Get it?  Just who is about to suffer to the point of braking because of any sanctions?  North Korea has been under sanctions for five decades, and I hear Kim's got more expensive a taste than his father ever did.  That is not realistic from a political or economic stance.  Russia now holds the spigot to a necessary commodity that feeds Eastern Europe plus, and they will keep buying it because they have no other choice.  Nope,  Putin or Assad or Kim or any of them, they are not afraid.   So the world will keep turning with all the bad guys doing their thing unfettered, and we wait for another day and another hero.

between Kuala Lumpur, Pakistan and North Korea.  Planes always carry enough fuel to stay in the air a few hours longer than their scheduled flight time in case they have to circle before landing or re-route due to weather, so it definitely had enough fuel to get to Pakistan or even Afghanistan, or North Korea flying low under radar above the waters of the East China Sea.    I know, that's about as likely as the shot down by aliens theory, which is even less likely than the hit by a meteor theory, but I'm just sayin'.....

If the United States is not going to be the world police anymore, someone certainly has to take the job.  I personally don't think Putin, or any of his buddies, or any of his "subjects" would willingly convert to Islam, so I am pleased that at least we have someone who would be willing to mobilize a physical military to achieve  an objective.  The scepter has been passed, the party's over, the jig is up, the cliches are endless...seriously though, who will keep the peace?  Who will keep the bad guys in check when one of them is actually in charge?
We need a hero.  Superman, where are you?

Who decides who's babies are more important?...

The way the world is reacting, one would think this is a picture of a Crimean or Ukrainian family.  Can you imagine if say the national guard started bombing your neighborhood?    Shouldn't we be more worried about actual bombs falling and bullets flying, and maybe put the chest puffing and posturing and empty words lower down on the 'how to save the world" priorities?  The US, or anyone else for that matter, is not about to stop Russia's expansion.
PACIFISM, by it's very definition, is no way to stop the spread of evil.
When Jesus turned the other cheek, all he got was slapped on both sides.
Is this baby girl's future not as important as the one being born in Crimea today?  Why is government sanctioned torture and slaughter of the masses ignored by the UN in some places but not others?  For example, the enslavement of about a half a million people in Mauritania, (see yesterday's post) is ignored by the world, and in my opinion mostly because no one can cry racism, a word that brings the rest of the civilized world running.  See, the slave owners are black too, so the rest of us turn our heads and chalk it up to "culture".  But the despot who rules Mauritania has no nukes, no natural resources, and is not even a flee on the back of the dog when it comes to military power.  He can terrorize only his own people, no one else.  Mauritania is on the ocean, too, we could just sail right up to their doorstep without having to use any other country as a through-way.  There is nothing there to destroy, only to build and create.  But we don't even help those we actually could, easily and swiftly and with a tangible difference in their lives in just days.
So you have yourself a great day,  America, and be thankful that some time ago there were real men who were not afraid to fight for what is truly right, and because of that you are here reading this today.

Man is an animal....

Indeed.  To deny or ignore this is to deny one's own nature-or at least that of one's adversary.
About twenty-five percent of the world's population remains without electricity, some two billion people don't have a toilet.  And then there is this, which I personally was not previously aware of-were you?    Astonishing as it is, those-the civilized, moralizing, evolved and enlightened ones, those 21st century men-well, they are downright outnumbered by those who's daily survival does not include time to "write poetry" as suggested by our President.  If one only looks around with open eyes at the general state of man (human), one can not help but notice that the aggressive naked ape is an animal indeed.   Perhaps the President and some others have evolved to the next level, but the majority of us are still thinking about things that go bump in the dark-like tigers and rebels and crooked cops and invading armies- and what will we eat and when will we eat it?  To really help real people out of real trouble, the kind that takes or makes your life,  free the North Koreans and free the peoples like the ones in the above link.  Then and only then should we entertain concepts like "diplomacy".

MDK: Murder, Death, Kill...

PictureDemolition Man the movie
"Murder, death, kill...we're police officers, we're not trained for that kind of thing"--oh, it's such a great line.   Something miraculous happened today on TV: the pundits are actually starting to call it as it really is, the spin is pretty much over because reality is finally exciting enough, isn't it?  The truth is now so obvious that everyone must state it lest they seem completely incompetent and ignorant.  We're actually hearing things like "diplomacy doesn't always work" and "the US has lost all it's street cred".   It is my private opinion that the President of the United States is now risking our national security with his foreign policies of denial and "look the other way".  I think our world view of our enemies, as well as our allies, is unrealistic to the point of endangering  our own well being.   For example, the porous nature of our border to the south and our complete ignorance of the history of  Muslims in South America is a real and tangible threat, yet border security has now been forgotten once again.  Instead of building that wall to stop hurricanes (which it won't), build the wall to stop illegal immigrants.
So the world is all in a tizzy because Putin wants to go down in the books as the one who tried to unite old Mother Russia and make her THE world power, since the US is no longer.   Are the Crimeans or the Ukranians being treated like the North Koreans?   How about those Russian made MiGs firing missiles at civilians, that's bad, isn't it?  Oh, that's  right, that's happening in the Sudan.  I don't see any emergency security council meeting about either of those countries though.
Ah, ignorance is bliss they say.  Too bad I'm not that ignorant.

What are some of the world's other despots doing?

PictureHassan Rouhani
Iran abandoned its military nuclear program because owning WMD  is a sin, the Iranian president told Russia Today.  The ban is formalized by a religious decree issued by Ayatollah Khamenei.   Awe, I feel so warm and fuzzy all over, don't you?

PictureKim Jong-un

North Korea first  fired four missiles on last Thursday, and now supposedly two more last night.  The U.S. is on joint exercises with South Korea, and Kim said he sees this as a declaration of war and is preparing for war.

If only he were not bluffing, we might actually get somewhere and free millions from the gulags.

PictureBashar al-Assad

Today Syria rejected John Kerry's plans to consecrate Israel as a Jewish state.  His forces, together with the ever helpful Hezbollah, are overthrowing the last rebel held border-town, Yabroud.   Well now, did you all take notes on how to suppress an uprising by those pesky citizens?

PictureOmar al-Bashir
This excuse for a human being almost came to the UN last year, but decided against it when Obama warned him about getting arrested since he's wanted by the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity and genocide.  So, since he is still free to do so, he is continuing the genocide of his own people with aerial bombardment by Russian made fighter jets and bullets, the latest round being delivered just last Thursday and Friday.  I'm sure he had a feel good weekend.

PictureDo you remember Pinky and the Brain?
Those tanks rolled through my birth country in 1945.  Those tanks rolled through my original home land in 1956.  And when those tanks come rolling in, you don't want to get in the way.   The Russians took my grandfather POW in 1945 and did not release him until they changed sides to the Allies.  He came home so ill that my grandmother did not recognize him at the train station.  My father was 13 years old when those tanks came rolling in in 1956.  He almost left then, except for the fact that his ride could not idle in the street for him to get dressed and had gone by the time he emerged  from the house.  That's right, folks, the memories are fading and the altruistic, unrealistic naivete of the ruling parties will not face the cold, hard facts.   At least Putin does not pretend to be something he's not.  We all know who and how he is, and he's acting exactly as expected and predicted.

wait, yes I do.  I am definitely NOT my brother's keeper!  The values of hard work and caring about one another are actually the way to keep from being kept by anyone, especially the government.
I must stress that those who are mentally or physically disabled should always be taken care of in a society, and those who truly need keeping are a small fragment of our society. They are the people the biblical quote is referring to.  But we are now talking about a different group of people, aren't we?
The people pushing drugs onto each other in the streets are not exactly working hard, and killing each other over the slightest slight and having babies without daddies is not looking out for one another.   When getting an education is considered a bad thing in a culture-well, what else is there to say?   When disrespect for rules and laws and elders is the norm-you reap what you sow is also in the bible too, I believe.
No sir, we are not all in this together, I am sorry, but the facts are that some of us knowingly and willfully do not work hard, do not care about anything or anyone, and then expect to be bailed out from the consequences of our actions by total strangers who are parted from their own earned resources to finance their brother's self destruction.  Thanks, but no thanks.  Why would my brother want to be kept anyway?  Oh, yeah, I forgot---he dropped out of school before the history lessons on other peoples and times who kept each other for their own benefits, or so they were told.
Mr. President, How can a black man stand up and ask anyone to be someone else's keeper?
There are kept people today, too, most obviously in North Korea and some of the Arab lands-you know, the ones who can't drive or step out on the street alone or even show their faces in public?  Now there are some kept people who have all their basic needs met, right?  And just what were all those communally kept, "everyone according to his ability to everyone according to his need" comrades so upset about anyway?  They had food and housing and community transportation, what was their boggle?   And just why don't the Ukrainians want to be kept by the Russians?  I bet my brother has not considered too many of these questions lately, he's too busy playing Grand Theft Auto on his government provided phone to consider that bread and circuses are the easiest way to pacify the masses and keep them herded like cattle in a certain direction.
Unless he is mentally or physically disabled, my brother can keep himself.

PictureDare you to knock this battery off my shoulder
Vladimir Putin to leave Ukraine alone.  The dare is working just fine-the warning is not.  Russia's actions will have consequences?  Oh, yeah, like what?  Is the U.N. going to pen another letter using words like "denounce" and "must cease"?  It won't matter, Putin will literally wipe his ass with it, I'm telling you, I can see it now.  I remember the toilet paper from the communist block of the sixties and seventies, and I bet the parchment these U.N. letters come on is a lot finer than the stuff from my childhood...and yes, I do mean it, I believe it's something Putin would actually do.  Makes for a great SNL sketch...how 'bout it NBC, I dare you...
