......I think basically means each one will add their own ingredients their own way in their own time, and before you know it it's ruined.  I've done that before all alone in the kitchen to be honest, concocted stuff and kept adding until I had an inedible mess on my hands.
Now to translate: I would like to see us Americans NOT refer to ourselves or each other as hyphenated Americans, but only as Americans. I have never, ever called myself a Hungarian-American, and I am first generation!   My father said we didn't come here to be Hungarians in America.  We did not align ourselves with the Hungarians already living here.  Many of them thought and acted mostly like they did back in the old country, 'cause assimilation is not always easy.

Our government should be blind to our race, our religion, our national origin, our sexual orientation, our (adult) age, whether we eat pizza or Chicken Paprikas.  Remember:

"Our nation is not bound together by common ties of blood, race, or religion; we are united instead by our devotion to shared ideals...."-Bruce Cole

We do ourselves and our fellow citizens disservice by arbitrarily or voluntarily self segregating.  In the eyes of Uncle Sam, there should not be Black Americans, or Gay Americans, or White Americans, or Hispanic Americans, or Asian Americans, or even Native Americans, or Italian Americans (how many generations do they have to be here before they don't refer to the family line as Italian American anyway?  Worked in Vegas with lots of Italian Americans---no, wait, they've never even been to Italy!  See what I mean?)  It's time to get past that now and live the constitution as meant and written, and let's all just be patriotic, law abiding American citizens.  The fed. government promised to treat us equally, all of us.  The color of our skin, the language of our prayers, the words spoken in our homes, with whom we keep company, all these things are non of government's business.   We should all be just equal citizens in it's eyes.

Ok, I admit, the very handle thenaturalizedcitizen sounds like a hyphenated American.  I apologize for any perceived hypocrisy, but I thought it was catchy....LOLOL.

How do you know you've assimilated?

So, you've learned to speak English fluently.  You make Thanksgiving Dinner with turkey and the all the rest.  You've learned to text.  Your kids have Face-Book pages and roll their eyes at you when you question their clothing choices.  Once a week you all go out for burgers or pizza.  You're wearing blue jeans and sneakers.  You're cooking meatloaf, pot roast and spaghetti with the same frequency as the dishes of the 'Old Country'.  You watch reality shows on television.  You know who is who is politics and show biz.  So, are you now an American?
Having and doing these American things is part of the total experience, but it's not the totality of it.  To be an American is a state of mind, a way of thinking.  Some of the world thinks this way of thinking is the 'what's in it for me' mentality.  Well, they are partially right.  This is the continent of the self-made man, the individual.  But there are differences between drive and greed.
The Constitution prohibits bestowing titles on citizens such as Duke or King.  The idea is that 'all men are created equal', meaning no-one has a higher status of being just because of the household they are born into.  Do you believe that we are all equal at birth, that no babe is more 'morally superior' than any other?   That's American.  If you really think about it, nations with kings and rulers and dictatorships-now there is greed and selfishness at it's height.
Our nation is full of the self made man.  In the beginning, we had no choice.  If you wanted something done in the colonial days, you had to do it yourself.  Build a house, grow some crop, go to market-it was all up to you and yours.  No hand-outs, only from your church and friends if you were a decent enough fellow.  Those early immigrants with genes for stamina, innovation and guts were the most successful, and left the most descendants behind.  Intelligent, driven, individualistic people tend to make the same kind of offspring.  It takes drive, strive and guts to emigrate to a new land.   So you see, success will generally beget success, and perseverance is the key.  When you encounter a successful person, are you thinking 'greedy s.o.b.'?  Not American.  A real American should not feel jealousy or anger toward his countrymen about financial success, but instead realize that success is a symptom of having drive, gumption and know-how.    An American knows that he too can be successful if he applies himself, uses his natural talents and supplements those by learning new things.
The biggest American concept is 'live and let live'.  The right of the individual to pursue his life as he sees fit, as long as it does not harm someone else.  Don't like homeless on the street?  Too bad for you, it would be un-American and un-constitutional to force them into housing if they don't want to go as long as they're 'harmless'.  Hence, we live with some social problems we can not 'fix', because it's not government's job to do so.  We can not force people to work.  We can not force people to marry, have children, use or not use birth-control, get an education, practice safe sex, become straight or gay, be religious or not. We must be exposed to-but don't have to adopt-cultures much different than our own, some of which are obviously detrimental to individual and group success.  I just don't see how 'Gangsta' Rap' is beneficial to our society, especially for those who wish to move on from the injustices of the past and embrace a better future.    And I find nothing American-free, open and opportunistic-about wearing  a hijab or a burqa, but she has every right to do so as long as it's voluntary.
Read those last two lines again.  That is my opinion, and as an American I often practice my First Amendment rights to freedom of speech.  That's what the Gangster Rapper is doing, too.  Sometimes some injustice is so great, some pain so long lasting, some concept so against your norm that letting that discomfort or confusion out is the only way to deal with it.  It is ok to stand up for and preach what you believe in, to try to strenghten your flock if you will as long as you don't try to stop me from leaving if I want to.
So, if you speak out sometimes and let your opinion or ideas be heard in the crowd, if you're tolerant (not have to agree with, but do tolerate without violence) of the differences around you even if they seem unpleasant, if you strive to be the best at what you are doing, if you believe that you can succeed at it one day as long as you keep working at it, if you believe your children can have it better than you did, if you believe in the power of the individual, and that without the success of the individual our society would not exist-congratulations, you have assimilated and think like an true American.

Why do they want to be Socialists?

There is so much wrong with almost everything the left is offering today that I will not even go there.  If you're reading this, you already know anyway.   These ideas are not new to me, I was BORN into them.  I went to elementary school in communist Hungary in the 70's during the cold war.   There was a framed picture of Lenin or Stalin or both in every classroom.  We sang songs about the pleasures of sowing and reaping, and work in general.  We looked identical in our blue bottoms and white tops and blue or red bandanas around our necks.    Indoctrination started early in childhood.
Seeing people as they really are and how we wish them to be is two different things.  The utopia described in movies and books and political propaganda writings are not possible in the real world.  Why not?  Because we are not ants, or bees, or even a colony of penguins.  We are selfish, munipulative, capable of cheating and lying beings who are instinctively motivated by reward and/or punishment and will act in our own best interest. On the whole,  will not work to support someone we don't know, who's not related to us, who doesn't work themselves even though they could.   Nobody in their right mind would.  And so since reward would no longer be an incentive in this brave new world, only punishment can be.   You sing about the rewards of your hard labor, and inside you're cursing the  ideological whip that keeps you working.  This is just reality and fact.
And by the way, there were beggars on the streets of my youth.  There were garbage pickers.  There were bums sleeping in the subways.  The communist utopia of my childhood was about quotas--the quotas that kept my dad out of university, the rationing that cut you off at the butcher counter just as you were getting your turn and they "ran out", my grandmother complaining about the voting ballot-there was only one name, Brezhnev, and you circled yes or no.  Of course he always won with a resounding 95% yes!  But my grandma would dare bitch about it all in her own kitchen and my grandpa would shush her like "Stop talking like that, women, before the neighbors hear you".  He wasn't kidding.
I'm sad.  Not even 300 years and it seems the end is near.  And there is nowhere else left to go to try again, there is no more land where one can be truly free of the tyranny of the majority.    I want my America back, the one where liberal meant 1) a woman's right to a safe and rare abortion before the first 12 weeks, 2) accepting same sex marriages  3)not being frowned upon for being non-religious  3)no discrimination based on sex, age, religion, nationality, sexual orientation or political affiliation.   That would be the liberals of my youth in America. Love, peace, no more war, pass the joint.   Their biggest clash with their parents was their long hair and refusal to go to church.  Oh, and of course, all our military interventions were just plain wrong because who made us the policemen of the world? Who could argue with that?  They did not, however, want to implement the very systems that us NATURALIZED CITIZENS were escaping from.  At least back then.
But that is also changing.  There are more immigrants coming to America today from already Democratic countries today than ever before.    Well the Soviet block is broken up, the Berlin wall has come down, and Socialist Democracy is practiced all over Europe.  So why are they still coming here, when they have basic human rights and free elections in their own countries?   Because their economies run on socialism- as in the state controls all big money making enterprises.  Like car factories, and oil pumps, refineries and all gas stations.  Like farmland-think like a surf, you're only leasing the land and selling the product back to the landlord.  Like all tv stations, news papers and magazines, anything in print.  Also things like tourist attractions, large hotels, amusement parks.  All schools, universities and vocational training schools.  All state owned.  Professional sports teams too!  They might see a drop in their paychecks.   And Hollywood too, the state would totally take ownership of production companies.   So you understand that under Socialism, no one gets super rich.  Like Donald Trump or Oprah or Bernie Sanders or Rockefeller or Shell or MGM or...you get the picture. A few who control the government in your name will get rich, like the Obamas and the Clintons.  They were not rich when they started out, but they sure are now.
