wait, yes I do. I am definitely NOT my brother's keeper! The values of hard work and caring about one another are actually the way to keep from being kept by anyone, especially the government.
I must stress that those who are mentally or physically disabled should always be taken care of in a society, and those who truly need keeping are a small fragment of our society. They are the people the biblical quote is referring to. But we are now talking about a different group of people, aren't we?
The people pushing drugs onto each other in the streets are not exactly working hard, and killing each other over the slightest slight and having babies without daddies is not looking out for one another. When getting an education is considered a bad thing in a culture-well, what else is there to say? When disrespect for rules and laws and elders is the norm-you reap what you sow is also in the bible too, I believe.
No sir, we are not all in this together, I am sorry, but the facts are that some of us knowingly and willfully do not work hard, do not care about anything or anyone, and then expect to be bailed out from the consequences of our actions by total strangers who are parted from their own earned resources to finance their brother's self destruction. Thanks, but no thanks. Why would my brother want to be kept anyway? Oh, yeah, I forgot---he dropped out of school before the history lessons on other peoples and times who kept each other for their own benefits, or so they were told.
Mr. President, How can a black man stand up and ask anyone to be someone else's keeper?
There are kept people today, too, most obviously in North Korea and some of the Arab lands-you know, the ones who can't drive or step out on the street alone or even show their faces in public? Now there are some kept people who have all their basic needs met, right? And just what were all those communally kept, "everyone according to his ability to everyone according to his need" comrades so upset about anyway? They had food and housing and community transportation, what was their boggle? And just why don't the Ukrainians want to be kept by the Russians? I bet my brother has not considered too many of these questions lately, he's too busy playing Grand Theft Auto on his government provided phone to consider that bread and circuses are the easiest way to pacify the masses and keep them herded like cattle in a certain direction.
Unless he is mentally or physically disabled, my brother can keep himself.
